Veteran Service Officer Assistant (Part-Time) 

 

The Veterans Assistance Commission of Franklin County is accepting applications for a Part-Time Veteran Service Officer Assistant. 

 

This position is approximately 20 hours per week, generally during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, at the Veterans Assistance Commission office located in Benton, Illinois. Additional compensated hours may occasionally be required for approved training, outreach events, community events, or other Commission business. 

 

Job Summary 

 

Under the supervision of the Superintendent, this position assists Veterans, service members, eligible dependents, and survivors in accessing federal, state, county, and local benefits. The position provides administrative and program support for the daily operations of the Veterans Assistance Commission while assisting with Veteran advocacy and client services. 

 

This position offers a unique opportunity to serve those who served our nation while developing the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue accreditation as a Veteran Service Officer through structured on-the-job training and professional development. 

 

Responsibilities and Duties 

Assist Veterans, family members, and members of the public in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner. 

Answer telephones, greet visitors, and schedule appointments. 

Assist with gathering documentation for Veteran benefit claims and county assistance applications. 

Prepare, scan, organize, and maintain confidential client files and records. 

Assist with correspondence, reports, memorandums, and general office administration. 

Maintain electronic and paper filing systems. 

Assist with maintaining office calendars, inventory, and office supplies. 

Assist with outreach events, resource fairs, and community education activities. 

Assist with preparation of reports and special projects as assigned. 

Maintain strict confidentiality of Veteran and client information. 

Develop a working knowledge of federal, state, county, and local Veteran benefit programs through structured on-the-job training. 

Attend required professional training and continuing education as assigned. 

Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent. 

Qualifications and Skills 

High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Valid Illinois driver’s license required. 

Strong computer, keyboarding, and data entry skills. 

Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic document management. 

Ability to learn and utilize multiple government software systems and databases. 

Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and in writing. 

Ability to maintain confidential information. 

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills. 

Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities. 

Ability to interact with individuals experiencing emotional, financial, or personal hardship with professionalism, compassion, and respect. 

Administrative, military, government, healthcare, customer service, or nonprofit experience preferred. 

Successful completion of a ninety (90) day introductory employment period is required. 

 

Military service is preferred but not required. 

 

Physical Requirements 

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. 

Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. 

Ability to occasionally transport outreach materials, displays, and office supplies. 

Occasional travel within Franklin County and surrounding areas for outreach events, meetings, or training. 

 

Professional Development 

The selected candidate will receive structured hands-on training from the Superintendent and will attend approved National Association of County Veteran Service Officers (NACVSO) training and other professional development opportunities as determined by the Commission. Attendance at required training is considered compensated work time. 

 

Compensation 

Part-Time (Approximately 20 hours per week) 

Starting Pay: $20.00 per hour 

Additional compensated hours may be authorized for approved training, outreach events, or Commission business.
