Jury Duty Phone Scam:The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving individuals who falsely claim to represent or be employees of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.Scammers are contacting residents by telephone and falsely claiming that the recipient failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The caller then advises that the warrant can be canceled if the recipient immediately pays a fine. These callers are often very convincing and routinely use the name of the Sheriff or Sheriff's Office employees in an attempt to make the call appear legitimate. In some reported cases, the caller ID has displayed the Franklin County Sheriff's Office's main telephone number, (618) 438-4841. This is possible because scammers are using technology known as "caller ID spoofing," which allows them to make it appear as though they are calling from a legitimate government agency. This is a scam. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office will never contact anyone by telephone to demand payment of a fine or fee to avoid arrest or resolve a warrant. Likewise, no legitimate law enforcement agency will request payment through gift cards, prepaid debit cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or other unconventional payment methods. If you receive a call of this nature:*Do not provide any personal, financial, or banking information.*Do not send money or make any form of payment.*Hang up immediately if you have any doubt about the legitimacy of the call.If you are concerned that the call may be legitimate, independently contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Office using a known, verified telephone number rather than returning the call or calling any number provided by the caller.Residents are encouraged to share this warning with friends, neighbors, and family members, especially older adults, who are often specifically targeted by these types of financial scams. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating these incidents and reminds the public to remain vigilant. Public awareness is one of the best defenses against these fraudulent schemes. Anyone who has received one of these calls or believes they may have been the victim of this scam is encouraged to contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.Sheriff Kyle Bacon ... See MoreSee Less
