Fatal Traffic Crash Investigation -On May 7, 2026, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the Franklin County Office of Emergency Management and Communications received a 911 call reporting a two-vehicle crash on Illinois State Highway 34 near Marvel Road, west of Thompsonville. The caller reported that the crash appeared to be head-on and that at least one person was trapped inside a vehicle. Injuries were reported.Franklin County Deputies, fire personnel, and AMR Ambulances were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency responders began rendering aid to the occupants.The driver of Unit #1, a 16-year-old female, was transported by ambulance to Franklin Hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. The driver of Unit #2, a 47 year old male, was airlifted from the scene to a trauma center with significant injuries. Both vehicle were only occupied by the drivers.The preliminary investigation indicates that Unit #1, a Chevrolet Malibu traveling westbound on Illinois Route 34, crossed into the eastbound lane and struck Unit #2, a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck traveling eastbound. Numerous agencies were dispatched and assisted at the crash scene. They include the Thompsonville Police Department, Cave-Eastern Fire, Ewing-Northern Fire, Benton Fire, AMR Ambulance, and AirEvac.The crash is being investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, and the Franklin County Coroners Office.
