Coroner Leffler Confirms Death of Rend Lake Boater

(Benton, Illinois) Franklin County Coroner Marty P. Leffler has confirmed that Bryan W. Petty, 37 of Fairview Heights, Illinois was located deceased this afternoon at approximately 12:37 PM at Rend Lake. Coroner Leffler pronounced Mr. Petty deceased at 1:19 PM. 

Emergency crews were dispatched to Rend Lake shortly after 5:00 PM on Monday evening for a report of a male subject who had entered the water from a boat and failed to re-surface. Mr. Petty was recreating with his family at the time of the incident. After an extensive search of the area on Monday evening, rescue personnel were forced to suspend the search until early this morning. 

Crews continued a search of the area using side scan sonar equipped boats and public safety divers today and located Mr. Petty’s body in approximately 11 feet of water. Initial investigation of the incident has revealed that alcohol is expected to have played a factor into this tragic death. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8th, 2020. The investigation into the incident is ongoing with the Franklin County Coroner’s Office and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
